Cost Per Mille (CPM): What It Means and How to Use It

Cost Per Mille (CPM): What It Means and How to Use It

A thousand small eyes in a grid with one coin

Short answer

Cost per mille (CPM) is the price an advertiser pays for one thousand impressions of an ad. “Mille” is Latin for thousand. The formula is total cost divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000: a campaign that costs $60 and delivers 12,000 impressions has a CPM of $5.

Key takeaways

  • Cost per mille (CPM) is the price of one thousand impressions. “Mille” is Latin for thousand.
  • Formula: CPM = (total cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000. A $60 campaign with 12,000 impressions has a $5 CPM.
  • 2026 estimates put CPMs at roughly $3 to $12 on Reddit and TikTok, $5 to $15 on X and YouTube, and $100 to $150 for direct sponsorships of AI, tech and B2B SaaS newsletters.
  • CPM alone says nothing about results. Divide it by expected clicks to get a cost per click: CPC = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR).
  • Cheap impressions can be expensive per customer, and expensive impressions can be cheap per customer.

CPM is the oldest pricing unit in advertising and still the most common. Social platforms, video, display networks and many newsletters price in CPM. It is also the unit most likely to make a channel look cheap when it is not.

The formula

CPM = (total cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000

Working backwards is just as useful:

  • Cost = (CPM × impressions) ÷ 1,000. At a $10 CPM, 50,000 impressions cost $500.
  • Impressions = (cost ÷ CPM) × 1,000. At a $10 CPM, $300 buys 30,000 impressions.

An impression is one showing of an ad. It does not mean someone noticed it, read it or remembered it.

Typical CPMs in 2026

Platforms rarely publish averages. These ranges come from agency and vendor estimates published in 2026, described in more detail in our individual cost guides:

Platform-wide (broad interest targeting): CPM $3 to $9.

Notice how newsletter CPMs are many times higher than social CPMs. That is not because newsletters are overpriced. A newsletter impression is usually counted per open, by a subscriber who chose the topic, with the ad sitting inside content they read. A social impression can be a half-second scroll past.

From CPM to cost per click

To compare a CPM channel with a channel that charges per click, convert:

CPC = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR)

where CTR is the click-through rate as a decimal.

CPMCTREffective CPC
$50.5%$1.00
$52%$0.25
$121%$1.20
$1203%$4.00

The last row is roughly what a niche newsletter can look like: a high CPM but a much higher CTR than social ads. The second row shows why a creative that earns attention can make a cheap channel very cheap.

When CPM is the right measure

CPM makes sense when the goal is to be seen: building awareness before a launch, reminding past visitors of your product, or reaching a large audience with a simple message. It is the natural unit for comparing reach between channels.

When the goal is a click, a sign-up or a sale, CPM is only an input. You still need the CTR and the conversion rate to know what you are really paying. Our guide to CPM vs CPC covers when to choose each pricing model, and our guide to cost per acquisition shows how to take the calculation all the way to customers.

CPM on listings and boards

Fixed-price listings, such as a directory placement or a position on a ranking board, do not sell impressions directly. You can still estimate an equivalent: divide the price by the number of people who will see the listing, and multiply by 1,000. More useful is the cost per click, if the site shows clicks per listing. Our pillar guide to what a click costs on UpRank explains how to read those numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille, the price of one thousand ad impressions. “Mille” is Latin for thousand.

How do you calculate CPM?

Divide total cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. A campaign that costs $60 and gets 12,000 impressions has a $5 CPM.

What is a good CPM?

It depends on the channel and audience. In 2026, estimates range from about $3 on broad Reddit targeting to more than $100 for direct sponsorships of AI and tech newsletters. A good CPM is one that leads to an acceptable cost per click and per customer.

How do I convert CPM to CPC?

Divide the CPM by 1,000 times the click-through rate. At a $5 CPM and a 1% CTR, each click effectively costs $0.50.
