Short answer
SEO aims to rank pages in search results so people click through to them. AEO aims to make pages the sources that AI assistants and AI search features quote in their answers. They share the same foundations, crawling, indexing and helpful content, and Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI features. What changes is the scoreboard: in AEO, success is being cited inside an answer, often without a click, and the pages cited are no longer simply the ones that rank first.
Key takeaways
- AEO is not a replacement for SEO. Both depend on pages that can be crawled, indexed and trusted.
- The main difference is the result you measure: SEO counts rankings and clicks, AEO counts citations and AI referrals.
- In 2026, Ahrefs found that only 37.9% of pages cited in Google’s AI Overviews also ranked in the top ten for the same query, down from about 76% in 2025.
- Pew Research found that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one.
- On UpRank we run both together and measure both: search clicks, AI citations and AI referrals.
AEO and SEO side by side
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A list of results on a search page | Inside an answer written by an AI assistant or AI search feature |
| What counts as success | A high ranking and a click | Being quoted or cited as a source |
| What the reader sees | Your title and snippet among others | A sentence based on your page, sometimes with a link |
| Typical measure | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Citations, mentions, AI referral visits |
| Main tools | Search Console, rank trackers, analytics | Search Console, Bing’s AI Performance beta, referral tracking, question logs |
| Technical basis | Crawling, indexing, clean URLs | The same, plus access for AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot |
What doesn’t change
Pages still have to be crawled and indexed. Google says that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be “indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet,” and that there are “no additional requirements” or “special optimizations necessary.” OpenAI and Perplexity both rely on their own crawlers being allowed in.
Helpful content still wins. Google’s 2026 guide to its generative AI features, as summarized by GIGAZINE, says that creating content people find unique, engaging and helpful has more impact than anything else in the guide, and that all existing technical SEO practices remain valid.
Authority still counts. In Ahrefs’ study of ChatGPT’s most-cited pages, the cited pages that had organic visibility came mostly from very strong domains: 65.3% had a Domain Rating of 81 or more. Being trusted on the wider web matters to answer engines too.
Tricks still do not work. The same Google guide lists llms.txt files, content chunking, rewriting content for AI and special schema among things you do not need. Search engines have long ignored tactics that exist only for machines, and AI features are no different.
What changes
Ranking first no longer guarantees a citation. Ahrefs analyzed about 4 million AI Overview URLs and published the result in March 2026: 37.9% of cited pages also appeared in the top ten for the same query. Its July 2025 study had found about 76%. One explanation it offers is query fan-out, the technique Google describes in which AI features run “multiple related searches across subtopics” before answering. A page can be cited because it answered a sub-question well, even if it ranks modestly for the main one.
Fewer clicks are available. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025. On Google visits with an AI summary, they clicked a traditional result 8% of the time, against 15% without a summary, and clicked a link inside the summary 1% of the time. If fewer readers click, the pages that are cited inside the answer are the ones that get noticed.
Citations can come from pages that barely rank. In the Ahrefs study of ChatGPT’s 1,000 most-cited pages, 28.3% had no organic keywords at all. Answer engines find sources in ways that do not always match a search ranking.
Freshness weighs more. The same study found that, among cited pages with an update date, 89.7% had been updated in 2025. For questions about prices, rules and limits, a recent and dated page has an advantage.
Measurement gets harder. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic within the normal Search Console Performance report, without separating it. Bing has tested an AI Performance report that shows citations in Copilot but not clicks. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, so its referrals can be counted. Beyond that, the most direct measure is to ask the questions yourself and record who is cited.
What to do about it
Treat AEO as SEO done with the answer in mind:
- Keep the foundations. Crawlable pages, one URL each, a sitemap, fast and readable templates.
- Open the door to AI search crawlers. Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot alongside Googlebot and Bingbot.
- Lead with the answer. Put a complete, quotable answer at the top of every page.
- Cover the follow-up questions. Query fan-out rewards pages that answer the related sub-questions too.
- Add what only you know. Original data and first-hand results are the strongest reason for an answer engine to choose your page.
- Date everything. Show when facts were checked and update them when they change.
- Measure both scoreboards. Track clicks and rankings, and track citations and AI referrals.
How we run both on UpRank
This blog is part of the UpRank experiment, which tests whether useful content and answer engine optimization can bring a pay-to-rank board the attention that hype once did. We do not treat AEO and SEO as separate projects:
- One set of pages for both. Each article targets a question people search for, such as Google Ads cost or what a good CTR is, and opens with a short answer that an assistant can quote.
- Original data for citations. Our UpRank data page gives answer engines figures they cannot find elsewhere.
- Coverage for fan-out. Six guides group related questions, so a reader, or a machine running several searches, finds the follow-ups one link away.
- Two scoreboards. We record search clicks and impressions, ChatGPT referrals through utm_source=chatgpt.com, and whether a fixed set of questions cites us. Each result goes into the experiment log with its date.

Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Both rely on pages that can be crawled, indexed and trusted, and Google says its AI features need no special optimization. AEO adds a focus on being quoted inside answers and on measuring citations.
Do I need a separate strategy for AEO?
Not a separate one, but a wider one: answer first, cover follow-up questions, publish original data, allow AI search crawlers and measure citations as well as clicks.
Does ranking first in Google still get you into AI Overviews?
It helps, but less than before. Ahrefs found in 2026 that 37.9% of pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top ten for the same query, down from about 76% in its 2025 study.
Do AI answers reduce clicks to websites?
Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked links inside the summary on 1% of visits.
How do you measure AEO?
Use Search Console for Google, Bing’s AI Performance report where available, utm_source=chatgpt.com for ChatGPT referrals, and a fixed list of questions checked regularly in each assistant.
